Close Up trip to Washington DC

Close Up trip to Washington DC

On November 6 through November 12, five Seaman High seniors: Jennifer Howard, Heather Gillaspie, Crystal Beach, Morgan Mills , Maria Grimes, and their sponsor Mr. Randy Crome, travelled to Washington DC for Seaman High School’s annual social studies department participation in the Close Up program.  Close Up, is a non-partisan/non-profit foundation that has provided an up close and personal government and civics educational experience for thousands of high school students for more than 40 years. Seaman High School students have participated in the program for more than 30 years.

The Close Up program brings students from across the nation together into workshop and on on-site discussion groups that allow for in-depth examination of controversial issues and discussion about the role and responsibility of citizens in a democratic society.  Time is also spent discussing and debating current government legislation.  More than 200 students from Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Maryland, North Dakota, California, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, New York, Texas and Canada joined the students from SHS the week of the  program.

Seaman High students met personally with the staff members from Senator Moran’s and Senator Robert’s offices. A member of Representative Lynn Jenkins staff also met with the students and they were given a personal tour of the Capitol by one of her staff members. During the week, The students discussed elections and the topics of the 2nd Amendment and immigration, as well as debating other issues and listening to presenters. In addition to a general focus on the functions of our federal government, much time was spent visiting and discussing the many monuments and historical sites of Washington DC as a way to analyze the role that significant leaders and individuals have played in our nation’s past.

Other highlights of the week included a presidential election night watch party, a performance of the musical “Carousel” at The Arena Theater, touring the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, visiting Arlington National Cemetery on Veteran’s Day, and attending the National Symphony at Kennedy Center.
