Centennial League Conference Discussion
Mike Monaghan, Seaman High School Principal, reviewed changes within the Centennial League and options for Seaman High School. Shawnee Heights left the Centennial League beginning the 2018-19 school year. Topeka West and Highland Park are considering options outside of the Centennial League as well.

Teaching & Learning Report
Elementary music teachers are reviewing a program called Quaver as a possible curricular resource adoption. They have been trying out the interactive lessons in their classrooms. The resource is proving to be aligned to current state standards and proving to be highly engaging for students.

An Elementary Report Card Committee comprised of at least two teachers per grade level and one teacher per specials’ content area gathered on February 3 and February 6 to review the current elementary report card. The committee reviewed the purpose of the report card, realigning to current content standards, standardizing rating systems and ensuring proper communication with families is occurring with this tool across all grades. Every building has representation on this committee. Once a draft form for each grade level is constructed, feedback from all teachers will occur and minor revisions may be made. Lastly, the committee will present the final version of the report cards to the BOE for approval. Implementation of the new report cards will occur next school year.

Special Services Report
Each year, the special education department is required to upload our students’ services to the state department. This report is the check and balance that is used to measure our Indicator compliance on our Individual Education Plans. The chart below displays our number of students served within each disability on December 1.

Late Start Discussion
The board discussed the viability of a late start schedule for inclement weather days. A late start schedule could enable the school district to have school after a two-hour delay. This would allow road crews and mother nature to help make it safe for students, staff, and families to travel to school. The board will review a "late-start schedule" at the next board meeting and consider adding the new schedule for next school year.

Vaping and Nicotine Testing
Mike Monaghan and the board discussed adding vaping detectors to bathrooms at Seaman High School and adding nicotine as one of the substances tested during the random drug testing at the middle and high school. The board will plan to vote on this change to the random drug testing policy at the March board meeting.

Action Items

The board approved:
  • the five-year proposal from Berberich Trahan & Company for audit services.
  • the change to the 2020-21 calendar (moving a PD day from Sep 21 to Sep 28).
  • the 2020-21 enrollment fees.
  • the BOE negotiations team (Fred Patton, Frank Henderson, James Adams).
  • the Superintendent's Contract.
  • retirement benefits as presented.
