Message from the Principal
As we finish up our last few weeks of school, I want to thank you for all the support you have provided your child, the Cardinal Staff, our school, and myself. It has been a fabulous and fun first year at West. I appreciate our families, students, staff, and the Seaman community for helping to make us the best at West Indianola. As the students chanted at the track meet this week, "West is the Best! West is the Best!" This spirit, energy, and leadership shown by our students is a testament to the culture we are contining to build upon for students and staff.
As we wrap up the last few weeks of school and participate in various fun events, please continue to encourage your child to put forth his/her best behavior and effort every day. We encourage everyone to "finish strong."

- The West Indianola office will close for the summer on June 7.
- On-line enrollment begins on July 16.

- Sneak Peek is on August 15 from 5:30 to 6:30.
- The first day of school for students is August 16.

We celebrate your child's positive behavior each month by opening up the Cardinal Canteen. Each student has the opportunity to earn "Cardinal Cash" for positive behavior every day. The last day for students to shop at the Canteen is May 16th. We are excited to have our 2nd Annual Auction for our 3rd-6th graders and are still accepting larger items to prepare for this exciting event. K-2 students will be able to purchase Slushies and Recess as their end of the year big event. Thank you for your continued donations and support as we celebrate positive behavior. BIONIC UpdateBIONIC Club will meet Thursday, May 3rd from 4-5:15 for their end of year party. Students need to bring $5 if they would like pizza. Also, please bring a side item or case of pop to share. Thanks for all of your hard work this year!!Our "Take Your CAN to School" drive was once again a huge success. As a school, we raised 1,637 pounds of non-perishable food items, which provides 1,364 meals for our Topeka Community! Way to go, Cardinals. Last Day of School
We are so close to the final day of the 2017-18 school year! Here are some details about that day:
- May 24th is an early release day for students. We dismiss car riders beginning at 12:10, and bus riders at 12:15.
- Please let us know by May 23rd of any transportation changes for the last day of school. This will help ensure we get all students home safely on this busy day.
- There is no afternoon Boys and Girls Club on May 24th. You will need to make other arrangements for this afternoon.
- Students will eat lunch before dismissing. Due to our condensed lunch schedule on early release days, we request that parents and guests do not make plans to eat in the cafeteria with students on those days.
- Grade cards will be sent home with K-5 students. If your child cannot make it to school that day, please make arrangements to pick up their grade card on the following days.
- The West Indianola Office will be open through June 7th, with Mrs. Wade and Mrs. Chapman on duty.
School Supplies for 2018-19With the help of our amazing PTO, we are offering parents the option of purchasing school supplies online through EduKit. This online option allows parents to purchase school supplies and have them delivered to the school by back to school night. Student kits will come prepackaged with student names on the box and be delivered to your child's classroom. We are in the final stages of getting everything ready to share with parents. All purchases must be paid in advance through EduKit. As always, you still have the option of purchasing supplies on your own for those who enjoy searching for back to school deals.PTO has helped us reduce the cost of school supplies by purchasing supplies for all students. Your support for our fundraisers is being put to use to help purchase common supplies for the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to PTO, you will not see a few items on the supply list as they have already been purchased for next year.Items purchased:

- The students at West Indianola ROCKED the Statewide Music Memory Competition! Both teams took home the gold with 1st place wins! There were 17 schools and 34 teams that they competed against this year.

- Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are learning Recorder. Additional music and information can be found in Schoology on the WIMusic page! :-) Students will present a small concert during the school day near the end of May showcasing all that they’ve learned. Dates are TBA.
- The 6th graders will be presenting a Living Wax Museum on May 17th from 9am – 10am in the school gymnasium. This will be the culmination of a 5 week study of Jazz Music, Jazz Musicians, and the Jazz Era. Each student will be portraying a Jazz musician that they have studied.
Boys and Girls Club
We just wanted to give you an update about the end of the school year. WEDNESDAY, MAY 23RD WILL BE OUR LAST DAY OF EVENING PROGRAMMING. There is still a half day of school the following day, Thursday, May 24, but we will NOT be accepting members that AFTERNOON, we will take members in the morning and get them off to their last day of school. We hope this three week notice will help you make alternative arrangements. ALL BGC TOPEKA LOCATIONS WILL BE CLOSED FROM 5/25/18 THROUGH 6/1/18. Staff will be in training that next week preparing for Summer Camp which starts on June 4th. If you haven’t enrolled your child for summer, please do so as soon as possible because we only have a few spots left.
2018 Staff Appreciation Week
Staff Appreciation Week is May 7-11. Thank you to all of our families for making this a special week for our Cardinal Staff. We appreciate the treats and events that have been scheduled for our amazing educators.
New West Indianola Staff Members
We are excited to announce the following additions to the West staff for the 2018-19 school year:
- Haley Slusser will be joining the Kindergarten team.
- Kristi Satter will be joining the 3rd grade team.
- Shelbie Lutz will be joining the 4th grade team.
- Kelly Wayner will be our traveling PE teacher.
If you are planning on your child attending a different school or district this fall, please contact the West Indianola office. This will greatly assist us in making classroom and staffing decisions for the 2018-19 school year.
Please make sure you are updating us of new addresses when moves occur. Students that are not residing within the West Indianola boundaries MUST complete an in-district transfer request through the superintendent's office. Students that are not residing within the Seaman district MUST complete an out-of-district transfer request through the superintendent's office. Know that these requests must be made annually, beginning in April. The address you provide as your "home" address must be the address where your child permanently resides.
2018-19 Transfer Requests
If you reside outside the West Indianola attendance area, you are required to submit an in-district or out-of-district transfer request to attend our school. This is required EVERY year, even if your child is a current West Indianola student. These requests may be completed beginning in April, so now is the perfect time to submit yours to our central office. - Fees Owed
Summer Gymnasium Reservations
Needing practice time for your youth basketball or volleyball team this summer? Contact the West Indianola office or Josh Gomez email@example.com for information on reserving gym space at West. There will be limited days of the week the gym may be booked -- all day Wednesday and Thursday and then Friday mornings. The gym is not available all day Monday, Tuesday or Friday afternoons. Please note that building maintenance work may cause some interruptions with this access.
Things to Remember
West Indianola's start/dismissal times are 8:50 am and 4:00 pm.
Reporting an Absence or Tardy
Mrs. Chapman keeps track of attendance, not teachers. Please remember to call the office if your child will not be at school by 8:50 (either due to being tardy or absent). When your child will be absent or tardy, a reason must be given. There are different codes used in PowerSchool that are used for health reporting/monitoring.
When reporting a student as absent, the office can also take requests for missing work. Work can be held in the office for pick-up or sent home with a sibling.
If you have a change of transportation for your child (will be a car rider instead of riding the bus, etc.), please notify the office BEFORE 3:30 PM. We are unable to grant change requests after this time. Thank you for understanding.
If you or other family members are planning on eating a school lunch with your child, you must contact the office by 9:15. We cannot guarantee last minute requests will be filled.

The Topeka North Outreach Operation Backpack program is a weekend feeding program working to alleviate childhood hunger in Topeka and to encourage children in need. To ensure the nutritional needs of children are met when school is not in session, the program provides a small sack of food for youth to take home for the weekend. The food sack contains a two day supply of nutritional, kid-friendly snacks and single serving size food items that are easy for youth to prepare.

Important Information Regarding Volunteers
In an effort to keep our students and staff safe, the District will run a background check on all school volunteers. You can access the form via the link below or by stopping by the office. Please complete the form if you plan on volunteering or going on any field trips this year. It is a simple form and a simple process. The form will be kept confidential and on file, so you will only need to complete it once this year.
While everyone’s safety is number one, we also do not want to discourage our number of volunteers. We greatly value our Watch D.O.G.S, our Room Parents, and classroom volunteers.
Seaman Parents as Teachers
Do you have a child under the age of three? Or are you expecting a baby? Parents as Teachers is a FREE early learning program for families in Seaman. You are your child's first and most important teacher, let us support you in that role through: free home visits, developmental screenings and playgroups. Become a Substitute Teacher or Para Educator
Are you interested in a job where you can choose the days and places you work during the hours your child is in school? Then being a teacher substitute is the job for YOU! If you have a minimum of 60 college credit hours, then you can apply for an emergency substitute license and fill in for a teacher who is absent. You can choose the days you work and even the school and grade levels in which you would like to sub. Please call Kathy Johnson (785-575-8600) at the Seaman Education Center for more information on how to apply for the emergency substitute license and for district substitute training sessions. If you do not want to be a teacher substitute, then being a substitute paraeducator is an option for you. Email Kathy Johnson for these job possibilities, as well.
Bus Drivers Needed
Become a bus driver for Seaman Schools. We offer competitive pay and no experience required. Part-time, competitive pay and training provided. Food Service Substitutes Needed
Looking for an opportunity to get out and make some extra money? General hours are between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm, depending on the school. Call the Seaman Food Service Department at 785-575-8650.
Free Preschool Screenings
Have you ever had a concern about the way your child is walking, talking, or playing? Maybe you have wondered about your child’s development. If so, please be informed that the Seaman School District Special Services Department offers free monthly screenings for children ages 3-5. Areas to be screened are speech/language, motor, cognition, vision, hearing, and social/behavioral skills. If you would like to have your child screened please call 575-8670.
