Mrs. Claudia Welch
CLAUDIA WELCH graduated from Washburn University where she received a Bachelor of Education Degree in Health and Physical Education and a Masters Degree in Elementary and Secondary Administration. She has taught in the Seaman School District since 1973 and is known as an advocate of lifelong health and wellness programs. She is a role model and mentor for her physical education colleagues at the district, county and state levels. Welch continues to provide strong leadership for the physical education teachers and a clear vision for moving the district forward on fitness-related initiatives. She involves other members of the District’s health staff and other key members of the District to build awareness of, and support for, fitness-related programming both within the district and the community. As a result, Seaman USD #345 has a culture that recognizes and values “wellness.” Welch’s passion in life has been to advocate for healthy, active, lifestyles for all people and quality programs. She is constantly promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices through on-going education empowering students, staff, and community members to take responsibility for their own health. Welch has written and received numerous grants that she used to implement new K-12 curriculums in the Seaman District Health and Physical Education classes and to purchase fitness equipment for Wellness Centers at their middle and high school sites. In collaboration with faculty and students in broadcasting/multi-media classes, her students have created healthy lifestyle PSAs that air on the Viking News program during the school day. To involve the larger school community, she helps organize the district’s popular Community Wellness Activity Nights that offer wellness and nutrition education. Welch serves as the Project Coordinator for several grants: Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant, General Mills Grant, Power Panther Professional grant, and a Target Travel Grant. She Co-Chair’s Seaman District Health Council & District Executive Health Council, serves on the Kansas Action for Healthy Kids Advisory Council, Kansas Governor Council and Executive Council on Fitness, Kansas Health Foundation Physical Education Advisory Council, Child Nutrition and Wellness Accreditation Advisory Committee, and the KAHPERD Council LMAS committee. Welch is also a Kansas Trainer and Director Physical Activity -LMAS “Let’s Move in Active Schools”, Kansas Trainer – K-Fit FitnessGram, and serves as a Healthy Champion for Alliance for a Healthier Generation “Healthy Schools Program” and as a Physical Activity Champion for Shawnee County “Get Active Kansas” program. Welch is the current President-Elect of KAHPERD (Kansas Association Health Physical Education Recreation & Dance) and in November will serve as the President of KAHPERD.
