On September 5, Elmont Elementary welcomed a special program from the Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB) into their PE classes. The Mobile Accessible Sports Experience (MASE) gave students in grades 2–6 an opportunity to explore sports in a whole new way.
The MASE program is designed to bring accessible sports and fitness activities directly to schools, helping students discover the many benefits of physical activity, including building social connections, improving mental well-being, and experiencing a sense of accomplishment.
During the event, students explored adapted sports and learned about the unique skills of blind athletes. They had the chance to try modified versions of familiar games, discover how sports can be adapted to meet different needs, and experience firsthand the importance of inclusion in athletics.
Beyond just learning new skills, the program encouraged empathy and awareness while giving students a chance to have fun. By stepping into the world of adapted sports, Elmont students gained a greater appreciation for perseverance, teamwork, and the power of sports to bring people together.
“I am consistently seeking ways to offer my students unique and meaningful experiences,” said PE Teacher Tara Yost. “I was thrilled to discover the MASE program, which allows me to provide this valuable learning opportunity to my students. My aspiration is that they will cultivate empathy for others, explore new avenues for leadership, and gain a deeper understanding of inclusion. It is essential that all students, regardless of their ability levels, are welcomed with open arms and given the opportunity to participate in the same sports as their peers.”
At Seaman School District, we know that by working together with community partners like KSSB, we are able to enhance the educational experience for our students and provide opportunities that inspire growth, connection, and understanding.
