Governor Colyer signed Substitute for SB 423, the School Finance Bill, at Seaman High School, before visiting two other Kansas schools to sign ceremonial copies of the bill. Our very own USD 345 School Board President, Fred Patton, chaired the House K-12 Education Budget Committee, and it has been said that Representative Patton "shepherded" the bill that will add approximately $525 million over the next five years through the Legislature.
The new finance bill is in response to the Kansas Supreme Court’s ruling that the current school funding system was neither adequate nor equitable. “The new funding plan is a big move forward for Kansas schools,” said Superintendent Steve Noble. “The new formula is tied to the specific needs of our kids. The five-year plan also affords us the opportunity to plan ahead for our budget and five-year capital outlay investments.”
The new formula will be sent to the Kansas Supreme Court for a final ruling on whether or not the amount is deemed constitutional.
“I am grateful our legislature and governor increased the financial investment in our schools. This benefits our kids, community, and entire state,” said Noble.
