Model United Nations

The 55th Annual Topeka Model United Nations was held on February 25 and 26 at the Topeka Ramada Inn.  This event attracted approximately 650 high school and middle school students from 41 Kansas schools.  Seaman High School students were assigned to represent the nations of the India, Uganda, and France.  SHS students participating in this year’s Model UN were: Alyssa Boos, Zaylee Bell, Olivia Oliva, Kyle Berry, Maverick Steinhoff, Forrest Brungardt, and Austin Kruse.

The students formed Economic and Social Councils, Political Councils, a Security Council and two General Assemblies.  In these councils they participated in debate on a wide variety of issues, including climate change, urban planning, protecting natural ecosystems, international refugee crisis, and many other topics. Four Seaman students (Forrest Brungardt, Alyssa Boos, Austin Kruse, Kyle Berry) had resolutions selected to be debated. Austin Kruse received special recognition in the Economic and Social Council for “Best Speech In Affirmation of a Resolution” and was a medal winner as one of the three best delegates in that council.

All of these students should be complemented for their efforts to research, debate and discuss complex international issues in a thoughtful and intelligent manner.
